Hurghada: Boat Tours, Diving and Red Sea Islands

Discover Hurghada through its old town, harbour and reefs, then choose between an island day, underwater observation and a historical excursion.

Hurghada between town and sea

Hurghada sits on the western shore of the Red Sea and is the administrative capital of the Red Sea Governorate. A visit can bring together the market streets of El Dahar, the harbour district of Sakkala and time on the water. These are different experiences: a city walk introduces the port and its neighbourhoods, while reef trips involve a boat journey and a separate activity programme.

Start with the day you want to spend rather than a long list of attractions. For markets and streets, choose a town visit; for underwater scenery, compare snorkeling, introductory diving and observation through a semi-submarine window. A beach stop on Giftun adds time ashore, with access tied to the particular excursion.

Town districts and the marina

El Dahar is associated with the old town, souks and local shops. Sakkala developed around the old harbour; the marina at Sakala Square began operating in 2008. Its waterfront has restaurants and commercial outlets. Plan a marina visit as a visit to a working leisure harbour, with the actual entry arrangements and meeting point relevant to your day.

The tourist walkway offers another urban setting, but a promenade address says little about access to the beach beside it. Use the city sights guide to build a manageable route and the district comparison to relate it to your accommodation.

Reefs, islands and responsible outings

Giftun belongs to a protected island environment. Choose an excursion with an authorised landing and distinguish beach entrance from protected-area charges. Public management of a mainland beach also differs from free admission; coastal and island access should be part of your planning.

At reefs, keep fins and hands clear of coral, leave shells in place and bring rubbish back. Listen to the briefing before entering the water. For dolphin observation, HEPCA calls for boats to keep at least 30 m away and avoid pursuit, encircling or following animals into resting lagoons. Wildlife sightings depend on the animals, rather than the name of the trip.

Luxor from Hurghada

Luxor changes the focus from the coast to ancient Thebes. Karnak lies on the east bank of the Nile, while the royal burial grounds are on the west bank. Allow a separate day for the journey and visits. Our Luxor guide explains the destination in more detail.

Cairo and the pyramids

A Cairo excursion is another substantial journey. Compare road and flight itineraries on the day-trip page, including the museum option and entrances. Admission to the Giza plateau differs from admission inside a pyramid. Continue with the Giza pyramids guide for the site itself.

Desert safaris

Quad, buggy and jeep outings are activity types associated with the desert around Hurghada. Their routes and participation conditions belong to the particular programme. The Hurghada desert safaris guide covers that setting separately from the town and sea trips here.

Sahl Hasheesh

Sahl Hasheesh is a separate coastal destination in the airport catchment area. Keep the accommodation address distinct from central Hurghada when arranging transport. The Sahl Hasheesh guide provides the destination context; beach and promenade access depend on the place you plan to use.

Marsa Alam

Marsa Alam is its own coastal destination with reefs, mangroves and an international airport. Treat it as a separate travel choice when comparing the Red Sea coast. The Marsa Alam guide is the place to continue planning that part of a journey.

Arrival and practical planning

Hurghada International Airport uses the code HRG. Organise arrival around your flight and exact accommodation address using the arrival guide. For activity planning, leave room for changes in wind and sea conditions. Read current official travel advice for your country and consult the Egyptian e-visa portal or your Egyptian consulate for entry requirements.

Choose a private car or boat when its particular format matches your plan. Keep a historical excursion and a reef outing on separate days if you want time to enjoy each, rather than treating everything sold from Hurghada as a short local visit.
